Steven VanRoekel brings a rare combination of public, private, and nonprofit leadership to his role as CEO of Earth Species Project.
Most recently Steve served as COO and EVP for Innovation at The Rockefeller Foundation. Prior to that, he served as U.S. Chief Information Officer under President Obama and helped coordinate the West African Ebola response at USAID.
Earlier in his career, he spent nearly a decade at Microsoft where he helped shape company strategy and laid groundwork for the Gates Foundation’s pivot to global health. A technologist at heart, Steve also brings an unexpected dimension to his work: he once served as a technical producer and photographer for MSNBC, documenting wildlife in Ecuador and the Galápagos.
